Things To Do In CapeTown: Also Known As The "Mother City"

Things To Do In CapeTown: Also Known As The "Mother City"

South Africa has got to be one of the most beautiful places in the world (It’s not up for debate). And since CapeTown is known for plenty history and rich culture, it absolutely deserves to be called “Mother City”. OMG that place is so beautiful. There is so much to do when visiting CapeTown and here are some of my favorites:

1) Engage with the LOCALS- This has got to be the most unique experience you can have when traveling. Let’s be real, traveling can feel mundane and the same if the people were the same all over right? Acculturating with the locals is what makes each experience different for me. When I was in CapeTown, I spoke to everyone who would listen—and they all listened. I observed how respectful the people were with one another and I was immediately impressed and in love.

2) SHOP! I have a problem—and it’s called shopping. This is why I like making my own money so I can spend how I like. No matter where I am, I always find something that suits my taste. What I love to do on my travels is to explore the markets and support the locals. I am not supporting touristy shopping centers—NOPE. I found GreenSquare Market where I spent a lot of my coins at because there were so much unique finds and I was supporting my people. I found all kinds of African prints and other unique items that can’t be found in the U.S. I can guarantee that.

3) Take a COOKING CLASS- I found and booked Fayruzah’s cooking class on AirBnb before going to CapeTown. ***Heres a TIP (book some of the experiences before visiting the country and the rest while being there—don’t book everything all at once—trust me) The reason why I booked the class beforehand was because Fayruzah’s calendar gets filled up fast. Yes she is popular..lol. But anyway, there were about 9 of us who learned how to cook a Cape Malay dish..South African style. I wanted to immerse in the culture by learning how to cook with a home chef in CapeTown and I surely did…It was so much fun and of course tasty. Mmmmm

4) VISIT a SAFARI! I mean why not??? You only live once to come up close and personal with the Big 5 right?? I had the most amazing time on my game reserve ride. I visited Aquila Private Game Reserve and it was a long day of exploration—but so worth it. There’s so much beauty in the world and there’s a special feeling when you can experience that beauty for yourself. That was what the safari experience felt like for me.

5) Tour BO-KAAP. Explore the artistic, colorful, vibrant and multicultural community of Bo-Kaap. When visiting Cape Town you must see Bo-Kaap, which is not just a historical experience but also a cultural experience. It was once a Cape Malay area, but is now a predominantly Muslim area. The restaurant called Mama Africa is located here too. I didn’t get to sample the food but I heard it’s delicious—if you enjoy Muslim food. In all, Bo-Kaap is a very colorful area and I would suggest visiting there with a group….not by yourself in regards to safety.

6) Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. This is one of the world’s first botanical gardens and it is so beautiful. When I went it was rainy and windy but it was still a beautiful sight.

7) Full day of Cape Point and Cape Peninsula SightSeeing Tour. On this excursion, I drove and hiked around the Cape Peninsula during a full day of sightseeing with a focus on the region’s natural attractions. I visited boulders beach, cape fur, Cape Point Nature Reserve, saw the penguin colony as well as other wildlife….such as seals and baboons. The weather was cold, windy and not on my side, however, this was a very interesting day.

8) Visit ROBBENS ISLAND. This was the most profound and humbling part of my two weeks being in CapeTown. I tingle whenever I think about my walk through the prison where Former President and political activist Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years. I cannot believe that I experienced this adventure. I am not going to spend much time talking about this experience because I am creating another blog post soley for that topic. So stay tuned and enjoy the pics.

So these are some of the things that I did while in CapeTown for two weeks. I really accomplished a lot and there was sooooo much to do. I didn’t list all that I did because I will be writing for a long time—maybe I’ll create a part two of this post. In the meantime, please enjoy and ask any questions or leave a comment.
